Cycling Cities 2026

Cycling cities for everyone:

How to make cycling inclusive for people with disabilities

At the Malacky 2026 Bike Cities conference, I had the opportunity to speak in a joint presentation block with René Dronkers (Bikenine, Netherlands) and Jaroslav Hefka (cShop, Slovakia). In my contribution, I presented the vision and activities of Ability Hub, the first inclusive center in Slovakia focused on adaptive cycling, accessible mobility, and supporting active living for people with disabilities.

The subsequent discussion was devoted to the topic “How to make cycling inclusive for people with disabilities”. Together we talked about the fact that when planning cycling infrastructure, it is not enough to think only about ordinary cyclists. If we want to create cities truly for everyone, we must also involve people using adaptive bicycles, people with disabilities, seniors and families with children in the planning.

At Ability Hub, we adhere to a simple philosophy: “A benefit for you, a necessity for us.” What is a pleasant benefit for most cyclists can be a condition for safe and independent movement for people with disabilities.

The discussion confirmed that the future of modern mobility lies not only in building new cycle paths, but also in their accessibility and usability for the widest possible spectrum of residents. We are pleased that the topic of inclusive adaptive cycling is becoming part of professional debates on urban development and transport.

Thank you to the organizers of the #CyclingCoalition conference for the invitation and to all participants for the amazing discussion. I left convinced that the will to change cities where active mobility is truly accessible to everyone is really here.
